An extension for automatic synchronization between WordPress and Moodle
For Capimonial (via the NRV agency): an extension that creates a Moodle account and unlocks the course immediately upon purchase through WooCommerce, without the need for manual entry.
Background
Capimonial, a professional training organization based near Toulouse (banking, insurance, finance, real estate), sells its online courses via WordPress and WooCommerce but delivers them on Moodle. At the request of the NRV agency, I developed an extension for automatic synchronization between the two platforms.
The e-commerce site (WordPress + WooCommerce) and the learning platform (Moodle, a security-sensitive LMS) were not communicating with each other. For every sale, the team had to manually create an account and assign the course.
The Problem
This manual data entry was time-consuming, prone to errors and potential security vulnerabilities, and forced customers to wait before gaining access to their training.
The Solution Developed
The extension listens for WooCommerce orders. As soon as a payment is confirmed, it queries the Moodle API to verify the buyer (email, username):
- if the account exists, the course is assigned to the user immediately;
- otherwise, an account is automatically created on Moodle, and the user is enrolled in the course.
The technical challenge
The Moodle API is known for being strict: authentication tokens, permissions, and mandated formats. Careful error handling and comprehensive logging of interactions ensure traceability and responsive support.
The Results
Access to the course is now instantaneous after payment, with no human intervention required: This saves the instructional team several hours per week, improves the customer experience, and reduces the margin for error.
