A salesperson who builds your website using Claude or ChatGPT can do it quickly.
It seems to work. Until the first bug pops up.
Today, many “developer-built” solutions aren’t really built by developers anymore. They’re mostly cobbled together using prompts by salespeople who have no technical background. Their goal isn’t to design a solid architecture. Their goal is for the application to work long enough to be sold.
And AI is extremely good at creating that illusion.
The question is simple.
Would you prefer a solution quickly generated by AI, seemingly cheaper, but designed by someone who doesn’t really understand what they’re building?
Or a real solution designed by a developer, who uses AI as a tool without handing over all the work to it?
The choice seems obvious. Yet, a huge number of companies still choose the first option.
What You’re Really Buying
In the first case, you pay a little less. The salesperson, on the other hand, dramatically increases their margin. Where real development used to require time, thought, and skill, a few prompts are now enough to produce something “presentable.”
The result looks like what you wanted. The interface is nice. The features seem to work. The demo is convincing.
But behind the scenes, there’s often no real technical thought. No solid architecture. No long-term planning. No clean structure. Just pieces thrown together one after another until something that stands on its own is achieved.
And as long as everything seems to work, no one sees the problem.
Until the first bug. At that point, the sales rep goes back to the developer to ask for a fix. Then another. Then yet another. And when it gets too complicated, someone is brought in on the cheap to “fix” the problem quickly.
We’re just putting a Band-Aid on top of another Band-Aid.
The real problem would often require a complete overhaul of the project’s architecture. But doing it right costs time and money. So we avoid it. We put it off. We tinker.
That’s exactly how massive technical debt is born.
And technical debt never goes away. It quietly accumulates until the day everything becomes unstable, slow, costly to maintain, or even impossible to evolve.
AI isn’t the problem
The problem isn’t AI.
AI is an exceptional tool when used by someone who truly understands what they’re building.
An experienced developer can save a tremendous amount of time with it. They know when to trust it. They know when to verify. Above all, they know when to completely ignore what it suggests.
Because a true developer isn’t just looking to get a project working today. They’re building something that can still evolve in six months, two years, or five years.
They think about architecture, maintenance, security, performance, and stability.
AI can speed up this work. But it doesn’t replace the thought process behind it.
Why so many clients fall into the trap
Because these offers are marketed extremely well.
The deadlines are tight, the prices are attractive, and the demos are convincing. In just a few days, they can show a website, an app, or a SaaS platform that looks “finished.”
And for the client, the difference is hard to spot at first.
On one hand, a developer estimates several weeks of work with a higher budget.
On the other, someone promises the same thing twice as fast and for less money.
Of course the offer seems appealing.
But what no one shows during the sales pitch is the state of the project a few months later. When the bugs start piling up. When every change breaks something else. When no one really understands the code that was produced.
That’s when the real cost becomes apparent.
The price of a poorly thought-out solution isn’t visible in the initial quote. It becomes clear later, when you have to fix things, slow down the losses, or sometimes start all over from scratch.
The real question
Today, almost everyone uses AI.
And that’s not a problem.
The real question isn’t: “Was this project created with AI?”
The real question is: “Who actually designed the solution behind the tool?”
Because in reality, you’re often led to believe that a real developer worked on the project. Whereas in many cases, no developer actually participated in the design. Sometimes, a project manager quickly tests the application before approval. And even then, it depends on the agency.
Most often these days, everything happens between the sales pitch and delivery with a single person: the sales rep you met at the start. They’re the one who communicates with you. They’re the one who writes the prompts. They’re the one who generates the features. And as long as “it works,” the project is considered finished.
And even when a developer is finally called in to look at the project, they often just skim over it. Not because of a lack of skill, but because the structure is already too chaotic. The project was never properly thought through from the start. The code then becomes a patchwork of pieces generated to meet immediate needs, without any real overarching logic. Everything holds together as best it can. Changing one feature can break several others.
Under these conditions, properly revamping the project often requires more work than starting from scratch. So we add patches. Then more patches. Until the application becomes slow, unstable, and impossible to evolve smoothly.
Because there’s a world of difference between an application that works today and one designed to last.
